This patty melt recipe isn’t only a crowd-pleaser, it’ll be your go-to for busy weeknights, hungry kids, or a special treat that you whip up in a jif. This Impossible™ Burger take on patty melt turns things up a notch with cheese that’s super melty, dill pickle slices, and cola-carmelized onions—made with meat from plants so it's better for the planet.
The sugar in the cola works not only to add a light sweetness to the onions, but also to break down the onion itself, creating a soft texture and morphing the flavor from raw and sharp to soft and sweet. The combination of sweet, caramelized onions, cheese, rye bread, salty dill pickles and Impossible Burger hits all the notes for a perfect umami flavor. Enjoy!

10 Ingredients

  • 12 oz Package Impossible™ Ground Beef Meat From Plants
  • Caramelized Onions
  • Melty Cheese Sauce
  • 6 Slices Rye Bread
  • Dill Pickle Slices, as desired

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 Yellow Onion, Thinly Sliced
  • 1 Cup Cola
  • 1 Pinch Salt

Melty Cheese Sauce

  • 3 Slices American Style Cheese or Plant-Based American Cheese
  • 3 tbsp Water

How to prepare

Step 1: Make the Caramelized Onions

Place sliced onions in a pot. Cover onions about 90% with cola and add salt. Place over medium heat and reduce until cola is completely reduced and evaporated. Be careful not to burn. Set aside.

Step 2: Make Melty Cheese Sauce

Combine cheese and water in a saucepan. Heat slowly and whisk until well incorporated. Set aside.

Step 3: Make the Patty Melt

Form three burger patties, about 4 oz each. In a large pan or on a griddle over medium-high heat, start to toast the rye bread. Add the Impossible Burger patties, and cook for 1 minute per side or until a slight sear has formed. Place each seared Impossible Burger patty on one slice of the bread. Top with caramelized onions, dill pickle slices and cheese sauce, and top with the other slice of bread. Cook until bread is golden brown and burger is desired temperature, flipping the patty melt if needed.

Step 4: Serve, Share, and Enjoy

Makes three delicious Impossible patty melts.
