Do you have a favorite barbecue sauce? Well, leave it on the shelf or in the fridge. Today you’re going to make your own barbecue sauce. The barbecue sauce recipe included below was specifically created for our Impossible Hawaiian BBQ skewers made with Impossible™ Beef Made From Plants. This recipe is an explosion of flavors, and your homemade barbecue sauce is the pièce de résistance on a dish that is going to get raves around your table.

Step one is to make the barbecue sauce. The bbq sauce recipe includes a couple of ingredients that you may not often use: dry mustard and molasses. Dig them up because we’d hate for you to skip these ingredients. They are critical to the rich, tangy flavor this recipe produces. And don’t worry about the molasses going bad in your pantry. Properly stored in a cool, dry place, molasses can last up to five years. And dry mustard is just a good addition to your spice rack anyway.

Up next is the pineapple and peppers prep. Go ahead and get a whole fresh pineapple. Don’t know how to cut up a whole pineapple? It’s pretty simple and there are lots of videos on YouTube that will show you how to do it. Of course, you can do it! You’re making your own barbecue sauce, you can certainly cut up a pineapple.

When it comes to forming the skewers, this is a job for the best kitchen tool there is: a pair of clean hands. Nothing beats your hands for mixing the spices and shaping the skewers. Keep them cool in the fridge before setting them on the grill. Enjoy!

  • 12 Ounce Package Impossible Beef Made From Plants
  • 1/2 cup Yellow Onion, Roughly Chopped
  • 1 Jalapeno, De-Stemmed & Roughly Chopped
  • 4 Cloves Garlic, Roughly Chopped
  • 2 Teaspoons Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Chili Powder
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Dry Mustard
  • 1 cup Ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Molasses
  • 1/4 cup Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons Hot Sauce
  • 3 cups Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon plus 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/2 Pineapple
  • 1 Red Onion
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 Orange Bell Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Onion Powder
  • 2 Teaspoons Dried Oregano
  • 1/2 Bunch Cilantro, Chopped
6 steps
  1. MAKE THE BBQ SAUCE

Place roughly chopped yellow onion, jalapeño, and garlic in a food processor. Pulse until a paste is formed. In a 3 quart pot over medium heat, heat vegetable oil. Once heated, cook onion, jalapeño, and garlic until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Whisk in chili powder, dry mustard, and tomato paste, cook for 1 minute. Whisk in other ingredients: ketchup, molasses, pineapple juice, apple cider vinegar and hot sauce, and bring to simmer. Add in brown sugar. Simmer for approximately 10 more minutes. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and set aside.

  2. Prep Ingredients and Tools

Cut up the vegetables and pineapple into fork-sized pieces and set them aside. If you plan to use wooden skewers, be sure to soak them in water overnight. This will help them from burning on the grill.

  3. PREPARE AND PORTION THE IMPOSSIBLE BEEF

Mix the dried oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, and remaining 1 teaspoon salt with the Impossible Beef until well-incorporated. Divide into 1 oz portions for the skewers. Keep cold until building your skewers for easier handling.

  4. ASSEMBLE THE SKEWERS

To assemble, alternate Impossible Beef mixture, red pepper, green pepper, orange pepper, red onion, and pineapple 3 times on each skewer. There should be 3 portions of Impossible Beef on each skewer. Once assembled, store back in the fridge. It's best to sear them on the grill when they’re cold.

  5. GRILL THE SKEWERS

Set your grill to 400F or medium-high heat, place skewers down, and cook for about 2 minutes on each side, basting with BBQ sauce throughout, or until Impossible skewers are seared nicely and cooked through.

  6. SERVE AND ENJOY!

Drizzle some additional BBQ sauce over your skewers once they are finished and garnish with cilantro. Enjoy!
