Impossible Foods was founded on the belief that diversity is what makes Earth a great place to live. Inclusion is what allows our company, community and country to thrive.
Today, to commemorate the National Day of Understanding(opens in a new tab), our CEO and Founder Dr. Pat Brown signed the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion Pledge(opens in a new tab) -- publicly committing to supporting employees regardless of their walk of life, ethnicity, gender, or ideology. The pledge provides a variety of tools and recommendations: diversity trainings, cognitive bias seminars, discussion guides, etc. Most importantly, it creates one unified hub where organizations can share best practices and collectively learn from our mistakes and successes.
It’s important to be intentional about how we address the concerns and needs of every employee and increase equity for all. As a first step, the leadership team has championed office hours and Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to provide a forum for employees to share ideas, shed light on blind spots, and always challenge assumptions. The ultimate goal is to build a safe and open environment that encourages conversation and empowers action -- in general, and specifically about diversity and inclusion.
“Impossible Pride” was our first ERG, established to ensure that members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community feel welcomed and included as their authentic selves. Other ERGs are taking shape as well, including “Women at Impossible,” and groups for individuals who share cultural and ethnic heritages.
Businesses have both power and responsibility to make positive and lasting change on our planet and society. Together, we can help elevate the standard for diversity and inclusion by serving as a model for our greater communities and even our country. And it starts by challenging ourselves.
