Amplifying the corporate movement on climate action — we signed The Climate Pledge
Today, we signed The Climate Pledge – proudly joining hundreds of companies like Visa, Unilever and Salesforce committing to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
The world is taking notice of what we’ve been saying for years: food choices are an integral climate change solution and must be a part of the conversation. Our meat made from plants is already better for the planet than animal meat, and our commitment to this pledge means we’re taking an additional step through our business operations to reinforce our mission.
In signing The Climate Pledge, we make three core commitments:
Regular Reporting: We’ll measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis
Carbon Elimination: We’ll implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies
Credible Offsets: We’ll neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040
The Climate Pledge bolsters the corporate movement to make real climate action
The Climate Pledge encourages businesses and organizations to take collective action on the world’s greatest crisis and collaborate in building a safe and healthy planet for future generations.
Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019 and have recruited signatories who play a critical role of stimulating investment in low-carbon products and services. The companies and organizations who sign the pledge create a constantly growing cross-sector community who can together use their innovation and scale to crack the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy.
This massive effort aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 – 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. As a reminder, the primary goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to below 2°C, compared to pre-industrial levels. Huge collaboration among governments, organizations, corporations and individual people across many industries and issue areas are necessary in order to meet this goal. Carbon reduction and elimination, however, is one of the most critical pieces, which drives the focus of this pledge.
As a first step, we switched to 100% renewable energy at all of our owned facilities in California, meaning our Bay Area operations now source completely carbon-free electricity. This is just our first, and critically important, step in our progress towards the three pillars of The Climate Pledge.
Our #1 goal remains offering delicious and nutrient-packed beef, pork and chicken products made from plants that are better for the planet than animal meat
Signing this pledge does not change what has always been our #1 approach to climate action: transforming the global food system to enable at-scale, impactful climate change and biodiversity solutions.
Every plant-based nugget, burger, and sausage patty we sell instead of an animal equivalent generates significantly less greenhouse gas emissions and uses far less land and water compared to animal meat. Eating better burgers and sausage breakfast sandwiches to reduce your environmental footprint? Yep, it can be that tasty.
We continue to be dedicated to our approach of subversive climate action through food, but we’re excited to take collective corporate action too. We commit to operating our business sustainably and we will always create delicious food that just happens to be vastly better for the planet than animal meat. The choice, then, will be with people’s taste buds – and we’re very confident in the option they’ll choose (hint: it’s meat made from plants).
Taking action is delicious
The climate crisis can only be solved collectively, but it can also be solved by the choices on your plate – and it can be delicious. During Climate Week NYC, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the restaurants that provide climate-conscious, mind-blowing dishes made with Impossible™ meat made from plants.
From FUKU’s Sweet + Spicy Impossible™ Nuggies to Pure Grit’s Smoked Impossible™ Beef Cuts, all of the dishes that use Impossible products use less water, less greenhouse gasses and less land than their animal meat alternatives.
The food on our plates significantly impacts the future of our planet. The Climate Group has a list of restaurants that offer sustainable dishes all throughout NYC, and all throughout the year. Any time you want Impossible products or dishes, you can find them globally on our locator.
You and your company can join The Climate Pledge
Committing to the core principles of The Climate Pledge is a situation in which the more is quite literally the merrier. If you are part of or know of an organization that would be interested in participating, there are actions you can take today to get them on board.
Review the principles: Take time to evaluate and ensure that your company or organization is ready to commit to the principles of The Climate Pledge: Regular reporting, carbon elimination and credible offsets
Commit to net-zero carbon: This is where the work begins. If you’ve already set a net-zero goal then you’re ready. If you haven’t, start by creating a pathway for your company to get to net zero by 2040
Have a conversation: The Climate Pledge team will meet and discuss the net-zero goals set by your company or organization, as well as answer questions you may have about joining (contact them here)
Make it official: Submit a letter signed by your leadership that includes a declaration to meet the commitments of The Climate Pledge
Become a signatory: Boom, you’ve taken a leadership position on climate change and are now a part of the growing commitment to net-zero carbon by 2040
The Climate Pledge has resources for taking any and all of these actions on their website: www.theclimatepledge.com
