Nothing says American classic like a platter of Sloppy Joes. Now you can whip up a batch for your friends and family with Impossible™ Beef. The Sloppy Joe is one of many variations on the loose meat sandwich. What makes a Sloppy Joe unique is the inclusion of a tomato-based sauce. And we’ve got a homemade version of the classic Sloppy Joe sauce that brings this dish to the next level. The Impossible™ Sloppy Joe will inevitably become a house-favourite comfort food at your place.

You can buy some Sloppy Joe sauce or use your own BBQ sauce, but then you’ll miss out on our secret ingredient in this sauce: Concord grape jelly! We went all out on this sauce recipe: onions, garlic, jalapeño, tomato paste, dry mustard, ketchup, chili powder, molasses, pineapple juice, apple cider vinegar, hot sauce, brown sugar, and the grape jelly. It’ll be the tastiest sauce you’ve ever had in your Sloppy Joes. In fact, you might want to make extra sauce and freeze some for the next time you’re looking for a stand-alone addition to a family meal.

The Impossible Sloppy Joe also is a great dish for meal planning and prep. Make it ahead of time for busy weeks, or if you just can’t get enough. Save and eat the leftovers later in the week—just reheat the Sloppy Joe mixture and add it to a fresh bun.

This sandwich is too fun to be eaten with a fork and a knife, which might actually be illegal—or at least it should be. Load up a bun with Impossible Beef Sloppy Joe, get some napkins ready, and dig in!

  • 12 Ounce Package Impossible™ Beef
  • 1/2 Cup Onion
  • 4 Cloves Garlic
  • 2 Tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Dry Mustard
  • 1/4 Cup Molasses
  • 1/5 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 Jalapeño
  • 2 Teaspoons Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Chili Powder
  • 1 Cup Ketchup
  • 1/5 Cups Pineapple Juice
  • 1 Tablespoon Hotsauce
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Cup Grape Jelly
  • 1 Cup Fried Onions
  • 6 Potato Buns
  • Bread and Butter Pickles, as desired
  • Slices of cheddar cheese, if desired
4 steps
  1. COOK THE IMPOSSIBLE BEEF

Over medium-high heat, sear Impossible Beef in a 3 litre sauce pot, breaking up the beef and cooking until nicely browned. Turn off the heat, and set aside.

  2. MAKE THE SAUCE

You can use 2 cups of your favourite bbq sauce or try making your own for an added challenge! Place coarsely chopped onion, jalapeño, and garlic in a food processor. Pulse until a paste is formed. In a 3 litre pot over medium heat, heat up vegetable oil. Cook onion, jalapeño, and garlic until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Whisk in chili powder, dry mustard, and tomato paste, cook for 1 minute. Whisk in other ingredients: ketchup, molasses, pineapple juice, apple cider vinegar, and hot sauce, and bring to simmer. Add in brown sugar. Once simmering, cook for approximately 10 minutes. Whisk in Concord grape jelly and season with salt & pepper.

  3. ADD THE SAUCE

Over medium low heat, add approximately 2 cups of the BBQ sauce to the Impossible Beef. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low for serving.

  4. SERVE, SHARE, AND ENJOY!

To serve, scoop desired amount of Impossible Sloppy Joe mixture onto a potato bun. Top with fried onions and bread and butter pickles. Add cheese if desired. Serve with a napkin and enjoy!
