  • ENVIRONMENTAL LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS (LCA): IMPOSSIBLE™ "CHICKEN" NUGGETS MADE FROM PLANTS AND IMPOSSIBLE™ SAUSAGE MADE FROM PLANTS IN EUROPE

    With each new product category we launch, we produce Life Cycle Assessment (or as they’re known in the industry, LCAs) to show the overall impact of our products compared to animal meat. 

    Each LCA we produce reflects the impact and emissions contributions throughout our supply chain for each product. We factor in the impact from ingredient sourcing, packaging, manufacturing, and operations to measure our products’ total footprint across land, water and greenhouse gas emissions.

    To understand the environmental benefits of choosing Impossible “Chicken” Nuggets over animal chicken nuggets, we worked with third-party consultants to generate a comparative LCA of Impossible “Chicken” Nuggets against the functionally equivalent animal-based benchmark. In this case, we used data from chicken production in Portugal and France.

    Here’s a summary of that analysis:

    The LCA for Impossible “Chicken” Nuggets Made From Plants found that, compared to typical animal chicken nuggets manufacturing processes, Impossible "Chicken" Nuggets are produced using:

  • 24% less greenhouse gases

  • 24% less land area in a year

  • 55% lower water footprint

  • 71% less aquatic eutrophication

  • For Impossible™ Sausage Made From Plants, we generated a comparative LCA against the functionally equivalent animal-based benchmark using data on animal pork sausage production from Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Poland.

    The LCA for Impossible™ Sausage Made From Plants found that, compared to typical animal-based pork sausage manufacturing processes, Impossible Sausage is produced using:

  • 47% less greenhouse gases

  • 77% less land area in a year

  • 88% lower water footprint

  • 94% less aquatic eutrophication

  • The results of the LCA studies clearly show that our plant-based "chicken" and sausage have a far lighter footprint on planet earth compared to animal chicken and sausage produced in Europe.

    IMPOSSIBLE™ “CHICKEN” NUGGETS MADE FROM PLANTS BEAT A LEADING ANIMAL CHICKEN NUGGET IN A BLIND TASTE TEST

  • We also put Impossible “Chicken” Nuggets Made From Plants head to head versus an animal chicken nugget from Brakes, a leading restaurant supplier, in a blind taste test with 214 people across the United Kingdom in February 2022.

  • And the results were clear: Impossible "Chicken" Nuggets made from plants actually beat a leading animal chicken nugget in a blind taste test 65 to 35%.

  • On top of that, 80% of tasters reported they would be likely to visit a restaurant if it served Impossible™ Nuggets after trying them, and 70% said they would be likely to switch to restaurants that served Impossible™ Nuggets after trying them.
