Wontons are such an integral part of Chinese cuisine. Whether fried, boiled, or placed in soups, there is really no wrong way to go. This particular recipe is for all the fried wonton fans out there, and it features a unique twist: Impossible™ Beef, made from plants. Stuffed with a perfect amount of Impossible Beef and served alongside a piquant dipping sauce, these airy, crispy pillows of delicate dough are fun to make and absolutely delicious.

When making fried wontons, it’s all about the technique, especially when filling them. Use a teaspoon to help ensure a consistent amount—one package of Impossible Beef should make around 24-30 wontons. Seal the edges by dipping your finger in a small amount of water before pressing the edges together, and do your best to avoid trapping any air inside. When frying the wontons in the hot oil, skim them out just when they’re golden brown, as they’ll continue cooking for just a bit after being removed.

The sauce-making process is actually two separate stages. During the first part, you’ll heat up your choice of plant-based shrimp and pork in a wok with pineapple and green chili peppers. If you don’t have any plant-based pork or shrimp, that’s totally fine; the pineapple and peppers can suffice on their own. The second stage of the sauce process involves boiling the liquid ingredients with sugar and then combining the fried ingredients. Once the sauce is done, you’re ready to dip and savor your still-hot fried wontons. Serve them as an appetizer, a snack, or make a meal out of them—you’ve earned the right to enjoy them however you’d like.

  1. MAKE THE WONTONS

    Ingredients used

    • 1 Package Impossible™ Beef Made From Plants
    • 24-30 Wonton Skins

Separate the wonton skins. Place a teaspoon of Impossible™ Beef on a wonton skin, wrap and seal. Don’t overfill the wontons. Makes around 24-30 wontons.

  2. FRY THE WONTONS

    Ingredients used

    • Frying Oil (as needed to cover wontons)

In a wok or pot, heat the oil. To test whether the oil is hot enough, stick a chopstick or utensil in the oil, if there are small bubbles, the oil is ready. Place the wontons in the pot and fry until floating and golden brown. Remove from oil and set aside.

  3. PREPARE SAUCE INGREDIENTS

    Ingredients used

    • 12 Pieces of Plant-based Shrimp
    • 12-18 Pieces of Pineapple
    • 12-18 Pieces of Green Chilli Peppers
    • 6-9 Slices Plant-based BBQ Pork

Heat a separate wok, add in ½ tablespoon of oil and quickly fry the green chili pepper, plant-based BBQ pork, plant-based shrimp and pineapple. Remove from heat and set aside.

  4. MAKE THE SAUCE

    Ingredients used

    • 3 Tablespoons Ketchup
    • 6 Tablespoons White Vinegar
    • 3 Tablespoons Sugar
    • 3/4 Cups Water

In another clean pan, add in the seasoning ingredients and bring to a boil. Add in the prepared ingredients from step 3, heat through until thickened. Add salt to taste and place on a serving dish.

  5. SERVE AND ENJOY

Whilst the sauce and wontons are still hot, dip the fried Impossible wontons in the sauce and dig in!
