The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Slider. Time to celebrate that centenary with an Impossible Slider!

The slider was created by a short-order cook and an insurance agent. Walt Anderson, the cook, was running a couple of hamburger stands in Wichita, KS, and one of his regulars was Edgar Waldo “Billy” Ingram, an insurance and real estate agent who had an office near one of Walt’s stands.

At the time (early 1920s), Americans were wary of ground beef, much like today. In 1906, the novelist and journalist Upton Sinclair published The Jungle, an exposé on the meat industry in Chicago, which shocked and appalled Americans and caused ground beef sales to plummet.

Walt and Billy decided to solve that problem. They formed a new restaurant called White Castle and opened it in 1921. The exteriors were white and inside the countertops were all stainless steel. The idea was to create the impression that this was a clean restaurant that served clean little square hamburgers that they called Sliders. (You can order Impossible™ Sliders at any White Castle for those days when you’re not up for making your own!)

We think the key to a good slider is our Americana sauce. Sure, you can use ketchup…but these deserve more than plain old ketchup. The sauce here is a mixture of mayonnaise, ketchup, sriracha sauce, pepperoncinis, and dill pickle relish. You can even make this entire dish fully plant-based if you use plant-based cheese and vegan mayonnaise.

  • 1 Package Impossible Burger
  • 1 杯 Mayo
  • 2 湯匙 Sriracha
  • 2 湯匙 Pepperoncini
  • 6 片 Red onion, 1/4" thick
  • 6 片 Tomato
  • 3 片 American Cheese
  • 2 湯匙 Ketchup
  • 2 湯匙 Dill Pickle Relish
  • 6 葉 Butter Lettuce
  • 6 Small brioche buns or slider rolls
  • Dill Pickle Chips

  1. Cook Impossible Sliders

    材料

    • 1 Package Impossible Burger
    • 3 片 American Cheese

    Form 2 oz patties of Impossible Burger, approximately the size of the slider buns. If you don't have a way to measure, one 12 oz package will form about 6 sliders. Over medium-high heat, sear your sliders in a pan or on the grill to desired temperature (approximately 1-2 minutes per side). Season with salt and pepper as needed. Cut the American cheese into quarters. Place two quarters of each slice on top of each slider patty and cover until cheese has melted. *Make it 100% plant-based with plant-based cheese.

  2. Make the Americana Sauce

    • 1 杯 Mayo
    • 2 湯匙 Sriracha
    • 2 湯匙 Pepperoncini
    • 2 湯匙 Ketchup
    • 2 湯匙 Dill Pickle Relish

    Mince the pepperoncini and combine with mayo, ketchup, sriracha, and dill pickle relish. *Make it 100% plant-based with plant-based mayo.

  3. Assemble Sliders

    • 6 片 Red onion, 1/4" thick
    • 6 片 Tomato
    • 6 葉 Butter Lettuce
    • 6 Small brioche buns or slider rolls
    • Dill Pickle Chips

    To assemble, lightly toast your slider buns and add a generous layer of the Americana sauce to the bottom bun. Top with your favorite burger ingredients! Our favorites include lettuce, tomato, red onion & dill pickles.
