To honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and highlight the diversity and deliciousness of AAPI heritage, we are excited to share delicious Asian plant-based recipes contributed by our very own Impossible Foods team members!
This Impossible Bakmi recipe comes to us from Gerald Malvin, a Sensory Technician at Impossible Foods. Gerald joined Impossible Foods in early 2020, and in his spare time, he enjoys reading and cooking foods from his homeland, Indonesia.
A little more about this tasty dish from Gerald, “Bakmi (pronounced Bák-mee) is a traditional Indonesian food that was influenced by the Chinese immigrants in Indonesia. The word itself translates to ‘Meat Noodles.’ Traditionally, this dish is topped with chicken, pork, or beef, alongside some vegetables such as bean sprouts and bok choy. As an Indonesian, I would eat Bakmi almost every day for breakfast whenever I am back home in Indonesia and it’s something that I would consider my comfort food. Not only that, I also like to think of this dish as something that represents me because I am an Indonesian of Chinese descent as well. Although many Indonesians, like myself, typically enjoy this dish for breakfast, it can be eaten for any meal of the day given how substantial a portion of Bakmi can be.”
For this dish, Gerald replaced the regular animal-based meat traditionally used as the topping with Impossible™ Burger Made From Plants. He makes it 100% plant-based with plant-based oyster and fish sauce. We can’t wait to try it–thanks Gerald!

- 8 Ounces Impossible Burger
- 1 Package Ramen Noodles, or any curly noodle
- 2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
- 2 Teaspoons Sesame Oil
- 1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon Fish Sauce
- 2 Teaspoons White Pepper
- 2 1/2 Teaspoons Sugar
- 2 Tablespoons Neutral Oil (Canola or Vegetable)
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons Oyster sauce
- 1 Ounce Bean Sprouts
- 1/2 Ounce Baby Bok Choy, washed with bottom trimmed and stalks left whole
- 1 Scallion, Chopped
Prepare the Noodles
Boil the noodles as instructed on the package. As the noodles are boiling, mix the salt, sesame oil, and 1 tablespoon of the soy sauce, 1 teaspoon fish sauce, 1 teaspoon white pepper, and 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar in a bowl. Once the noodles are cooked, drain and toss with the soy sauce mixture. *Make it 100% plant-based with plant-based fish sauce.
Cook the Impossible Burger
Heat the canola or vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Crumble Impossible Burger into the pan, and brown. Add the oyster sauce, and the remaining sugar, white pepper, fish sauce, and soy sauce to the pan and stir to combine. Cook until the Impossible Burger is cooked through, turn off the heat and set aside. *Make it 100% plant-based with plant-based oyster and fish sauce.
Blanch the Vegetables
In a pot of boiling water, blanch the bok choy for about 1 1/2 minutes or until tender, and then remove with a slotted spoon. Blanch the bean sprouts very briefly, and then remove. Submerge both in an ice bath or run cold water over the vegetables to stop the cooking process. Drain and set aside.
Assemble and Enjoy
Spoon the Impossible Burger over the noodles on one side of the bowl. Add the bean sprouts and baby bok choy on the other side of the bowl. Sprinkle the chopped scallions over the top of the dish, and enjoy!
